As winter nears its end (and it will end – I promise), it will be time to start thinking about spring cleaning and garage sales. To that end, we want to remind you of Help One Now’s great giving initiative, Garage Sales for Orphans! They are a great way to redeem your excess by selling your unwanted items and donating the proceeds to help orphans and vulnerable children around the world. We would love to keep you informed of the exciting changes happening this year to the GS4O initiative, so drop us an email at email@example.com to stay in the loop. Also, please let us know when you schedule a GS4O, so we can help make it amazing! In the meantime, we wanted to share this story with you from our friends at Community Baptist Church (around 200 people) in Dansbury, Texas (around 2,000 people). They’ve thrown a GS4O two years in a row, raising a total of $18,000! We hope this inspires you to plan your own Garage Sale for Orphans this year.
We first heard of GS4O in a Bible study and thought, “Now THIS is something we can do!” We set the date of our first garage sale for early November 2013 and got to work. We prayed, planned, prayed, made a Facebook page, prayed, began asking for donations of items to sell in the garage sale, and prayed some more. We really had no idea what to expect. Would anybody give us anything to sell? Would anyone volunteer to help work the garage sale? Would anyone buy our stuff? We began accepting donations a few days before the garage sale and were absolutely overwhelmed at the volume of items that were donated by our awesome church family. At the end of the day, we were astonished to realize that we had made just over $6,000! What an absolute blessing and joy to be able to give that money to Help One Now’s work on behalf of the precious people of Ferrier Village!
Fast forward to the fall of 2014. Again we began planning for a garage sale in early November. And again we began praying. This time we asked God to do something BIG in our midst–something that couldn’t be explained by human actions but could only be attributed to Him. We were amazed again at the items donated and the people who selflessly gave of their time to get behind our crazy little garage sale. Once again, God heaped His grace on our efforts. We had raised a little over $12,000! Hosting these garage sales has been such a blessing for us. We have built deeper relationships with each other as we’ve worked side by side. We have grown in our love for the “least of these.” And most importantly we have grown in our faith and dependence on our Great God. We look forward to seeing how He chooses to work in the future. “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” -Ephesians 3:20-21
